Setting goals for children

Now that we've touched on some basics about goal setting and what can be expected at different ages, let's take a closer look at how to set goals for children. But before we dive in, let's consider a few basic principles...

What motivates us to set goals for our children?

    • Desire for growth and fulfillment: We want them to develop in some way or lead a fuller life. Here, it's worth reflecting on whether we're truly focusing on their needs or trying to fulfill our own desires through them.
    • Boosting achievement and self-confidence: Goal setting and the accompanying sense of accomplishment can help increase their self-confidence and develop a positive self-image. It's worth reflecting on how difficult the goals we set are, as it may be challenging for them to experience a sense of achievement. Let's celebrate small successes too!
    • Meeting external expectations: Sometimes external pressures, such as grandparents' expectations or societal norms, can motivate us to set goals and strive to achieve them. However, let's take a moment to pause because setting goals in which we don't believe in or which we pursue due to external pressure will be sensed by them, potentially damaging respect and acceptance.
