So, we've set the goals, they were even enthusiastic about them, hooray, we're done! Unfortunately, not quite; now comes the hard part! How can we keep them on track, motivated to keep going, even when the initial excitement has worn off, but the goal is still quite far away? In our motivational article, we analyzed the difference between external and internal motivation, with the ultimate goal of reaching the latter, but how?
Here are a few tricks:
- Discussion of reasons: One of the foundations of internal strength and desire is understanding the reasons behind the goal. They need to know and understand why it's important, what its benefits are, whether for them, for us, or for society. Let's talk about it as much as possible, let them ask freely, rebel against it, express their dissent. The more opportunities there are to discuss these, to vent frustrations, the more wind we take out of their sails.
- Enjoyment: The enjoyment factor significantly contributes to the development of internal motivation, that is, how much joy they find in completing the task or how inspiring the goal is for them. Here, we play a big role in making even the most boring, difficult tasks fun and enjoyable. For example, let's admit it, brushing teeth isn't the highlight of our lives, day after day, even if we understand the goal, it's still monotonous and moderately boring. But it can be combined with many things: we sing to them while doing it, listening to music and dancing can make it fun, or simply being there and talking helps a lot (mostly we talk because they might not be able to while brushing).
